Paid professional development leave

Almost all EBAs entitle you to paid professional development leave so you can attend training or conferences.

Here's an email template you can use to apply for your PD leave to attend the 2025 ANMF Australian Nurses and Midwives Conference.

Dear <manager>,

I'd like to take two days of my professional development leave entitlement on Thursday 1 and Friday 2 May to attend the Australian Nurses and Midwives Conference at the Melbourne Convention and Exhibition Centre. You can find the agenda online.

I look forward to a favourable response so I can register today.

Regards,
<your name>

 Feel free to tweak it - just ensure you've included the dates, number of days and type of CPD activity you'll be undertaking.

Don't delay! You need to give at least 6 weeks' notice, and some employers require 8 weeks for rosters.

What if my professional development leave application is rejected?

Your employer must notify you in writing whether your leave request is approved or denied within seven days. Your application will be approved by your employer unless there's exceptional circumstances that justify non-approval which must stated in their communication.

Check your entitlement to professional development in your enterprise agreement via your ANMF member portal page.
